Search Engine Powered by the Crowd

July 10th, 2008 · Comments · Web 2.0

Me.dium recently launched a new type of search engine.  One that is powered by the crowd. Think of it like Digg and how the most dugg stories move to the top of the site.  Well now this new search engine is trying to do the same thing.  So stories or pages that are “hot” will move to the top of the search results.

It’s a very interesting idea and is probably where we are headed for all search engines in the future.  Considering the popularity of Digg and other social media tools based on the power of the crowd its no wonder someone decided to apply this to a whole search engine.

I wonder how Google will respond since they are the #1 search engine and are usually at the front of movements like this.  Same with other networks out there…will the “hottest” profiles on facebook or myspace move to the top?  It should be interesting to see how much control the crowd really will have in the years to come.  I don’t think algorithms will ever completely go away as companies will always look to have some control but it will be an interesting battle.
